I have been a patron of Petco for many years, and have a Petco PALS card. And, my recent observation and experience with how Petco has handled a grooming injury to my mom's only companion, her dog Molly, has left me so shocked and appalled at their lack of care, compassion, or even a real response or action to the awful event that left my mom in tears, not sleeping for several days (dog and mom), and the total disregard of the situation by passing this on to a claims company. Never once has a representative from Petco called my mom to see how she or her dog are. And, my mom now stresses about the next grooming and how Molly will be. It is too much for an 87 year old woman with little support, care or compassion to this big multi-million dollar corporation. Nothing! So, I took action....

This petition is being started for two reasons: 1) to let all animal lovers know of how little care or concern Petco really has for animals, and 2) to try to pressure Petco into doing the right and fair thing by compensating my mom and her dog for the horrible grooming experience they had and continue to deal with. This is truly a David and Goliath battle with a corporation that cares very little about the clientele it serves, but wants all to believe they care. They do not. Here is the story:

My mom is 87 yrs old and was given a poodle to provide her companionship and comfort, particularly through several rounds of chemo for leukemia. She recently had a pacemaker put in, which is why I have stepped in to help her because Petco does not seem to care. This is my mom's 3rd poodle so she knows what it takes and how to care for this breed. Molly is 8 years old and gets regular grooming (not normally from Petco) with no problem, same with the last two poodles my mom has had. But, Molly needed a grooming and this Petco store was close to my mom's house. Molly was taken into Petco for her bath and haircut/grooming. When my mom returned home, my mom noticed that Molly was acting funny (restless, moving all over the house, would not stop. So, my mom went to go see what the matter was. She looked Molly over and discovered she was bloody and bruised on her belly in multiple places. My mom freaked out, was so shocked, terrified, and did not know what to do; so she called me in a panic as she did not know what to do. She was told me to take photos, contact Petco, and take Molly to a veterinarian. She took Molly to a vet who had to give Molly an antibiotic injection, antibiotic cream, and a collar to not lick the wounds. She then went back to Petco to show them Molly's belly and to talk to the Petco manager. One of the female staff remarked that "well sometimes that can happen". It made her so upset because she had had several poodles and this has never, ever happened. An assistant manager (Greg), came over to see what was going on and he saw Molly's belly and her wounds. He was surprised and said "Oh my" and took photos of her belly. My mom was shaking and very upset.

I was not able to get over to my mom's but after a few days, I was worried as my mom called every day telling me Molly would not eat and she was sitting on the floor trying to feed her. I have had tears rolling down my face with that vision. Her only companion that helps her to get up, walk, and find comfort. When I saw Molly, she was better but there were scabs on two nipples, which means they cut her nipples off or injured them so that they scabbed over. And, my mother looked awful because she had not slept in days - because Molly kept roaming around the house, restless, and she was so worried about her little dog. I offered to take Molly so my mom could rest, but she refused and did not want Molly to leave her side.

At this point, I decided to take charge of this situation. After almost a week since the incident, I called the Petco store where this happened and asked to speak to the manager. The manager was less than compassionate and was quite frankly seemed bothered by my call. I explained to him the situation and his response was that my mom would not have to pay for the grooming. I told him my mom was most upset that no one from Petco ever contacted her to see how she or Molly were. He said that Petco would pay the vet bill, and what else did we want. I told him the dog was traumatized, as was my mother, and all were worried about the future groomings and how Molly would be, may need sedative. He offered a $50 Petco gift card - that is as good as it would get.

However, Petco DID charge my mother for the grooming and have not paid for the veterinary bill, but rather have sent us on to a insurance company to have them treat us like insignificant people. Never return calls or emails. Ask for more proof - pictures (which Petco has as they took them), medical records, credit card statements, yada yada. It has now been six weeks since the incident and nothing....nothing. And, still no call to see how Molly or my mom are. Recently, my mom got on her hands and knees and bathed Molly in her tub because she is not ready to put her in the hands of another groomer. She is still traumatized.

We recognize that many of the petitions on Change.org have far more serious and disturbing calls for action, but what this has done to my mom and her little companion is heart-breaking. And, I cannot believe a multi-million dollar corporation with a brand "where the pets go" has such a lousy reputation for not caring about their own clientele. It needs to stop....BOYCOTT Petco and demand they make this right and fair! Send them an email, call, and do not patron this insensitive and uncaring corporation.
